Science, technology and innovation in the State of Rio de Janeiro
Government of the State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil · State Secretariat for Science, Technology and Innovation (SECTI-RJ)
Where innovation is, and what we can prove.
A public inventory of the universities, research institutes, laboratories, technical schools, companies and strategic infrastructure that carry science, technology and innovation across the 92 municipalities of Rio de Janeiro. Every record cites the document it came from and states how precise its location is.

What this data does not support
This is a curated inventory under construction, not a census. Read these four limits before citing any figure from it.
-
Record counts measure our survey as much as the territory
We work through entire official registries, not municipality by municipality. So far 22 of 23 planned registries have been swept. A municipality with few records may simply not have been reached yet.
-
Absence of a record is not evidence of absence
All 92 municipalities carry at least one record, but 3 of them carry exactly one. Presence is not density.
-
Coordinates differ in precision, and each record says how
Some points are verified street addresses; many are municipal centroids that stand for an institution whose exact address is still to be confirmed. The shape of the symbol on the map encodes this. Do not treat all points as surveyed locations.
-
Do not rank municipalities by record count
A ranking built on these figures would report survey progress as installed capacity. The inventory is designed to describe what exists and where the evidence came from, not to score places against one another.
What is in it
Records are grouped into 7 axes, and a record can belong to more than one. Names below are the ones used on the map, in Portuguese.
Sources and reuse
-
Where the information comes from
803 of 825 catalogued sources are external to this project — public records from Brazilian statistical, educational and regulatory bodies: IBGE (national statistics), Inep and CAPES (education), FAPERJ (state research funding), CEPERJ (state statistics), ANP (petroleum), Anatel (telecommunications), and institutional portals. When a source is internal, the record says so: the link gives editorial traceability, not an originating reference.

Getting the data
Any selection can be downloaded as KML, KMZ or GeoJSON, with source credits embedded in the file. The map runs entirely on data served from this site and requests nothing from third parties unless you explicitly allow it.
Start with the map
It opens on the outline of the 92 municipalities, served from this site. The interface and the inventory are in Brazilian Portuguese.
